3 Ways crafting makes you a better parent

Most of us recognize the importance of health, our own sense of joy and happiness, maintaining close relationships with our kids, and the responsibility of being teachers and mentors for them in this crazy world. We are prone to experience many challenges on the journey to reaching these goals, like financial or time constraints, or lack of resources and access to facilities or a support network.

If you or your kids enjoy crafting, I’ve got great news for you.

There are a few ways in which you can be a better parent, simply through doing what you love:

1. Teaching your kids new skills and building their character

By spending time with your child doing crafts, especially those with an art component, you get to be directly involved in their development of crucial skills that will serve them well throughout their lives.

Some the skills which are developed and stimulated, are their creativity, imagination, self-expression, and communicating their feelings.

When kids do creative crafting activities regularly, they get opportunities to develop their determination, self-discipline, and internal motivation. These characteristics are important facets that will serve them well in growing up to become well-rounded and well-adjusted humans, which is what we all want for our kids.

2. Investing in self-care

Self-care can be defined as anything that nurtures and supports you as a person, to improve and maintain your emotional, mental, spiritual, or physical health. For example, taking time off to relax or rest, nourishing your body with delicious and healthy food, spending time in nature, moving your body, etc.

I talk a lot about self-care with my clients and online community, it is vital for each of us and has so many amazing benefits. Some of which is to reduce stress and tension, relax, become mindful of your own thoughts which need changing or attention, and improve your emotional well-being.

Creative crafts could also be a way for you to invest in self-care. There are many activities which can be defined as DIY crafts, too many to mention in this blog post. If you truly enjoy crafting and it helps you to relax, de-stress, unwind, and you get joy from it, then that is a great way of taking care of yourself.

3. Increasing your sense of passion and fulfilment

How many weeks have gone by where you’ve felt like you hadn’t accomplished anything, you’re simply living for the weekend. Then comes Monday and it feels like your weekend was too short for you to enjoy and relax.

That is often an indication of a lack of passion and fulfilment in one’s life. This can make you an impatient, moody, angry, stressed, and disconnected parent. No one wants to be like that, and your kids also suffer when you are in such a dark place.

An easy and enjoyable way for you to overcome this – to increase your sense of passion and fulfilment, is to spend regular time with your kids doing creative DIY crafts. If you use the results of your crafts as a way to obtain donations for a charity or to support a needy cause, it will give you a sense of purpose that brings great joy to your life.

What an amazing lesson to teach your kids through your own example – that they can spend their free time doing something they enjoy, with an end goal of helping others who truly need it. They will experience first hand the joy and fulfilment it gives them when they donate their time and effort for a purpose outside of themselves.

I hope this blog post encourages you to spend more time doing creative DIY crafts with your kids.

It truly can be the gift that keeps on giving.
